For some applications, good ‘ol lead-acid is the best way to go. This is the battery type used in off-grid solar home power systems & back-up power systems. Don’t worry, they come in small sizes too.

When it comes to the small systems, lead-acid batteries (flooded, AGM, Gel) batteries support AC power inverters unlike most small lithium battery packs. This doesn’t mean that this is the best option for running the wall charger for your dSLR camera. But, if you need to pack enough power to support a CPAP machine for several nights, computers & research equipment, or equipment needing an AC power source, SLA will be your battery type.
