How a shunt worksA shunt is used to measure the flow of current through a circuit. As a highly tuned resistor, a shunt provides a very small voltage drop when current flows through it, which a meter uses to calculate how much current is flowing in the circuit. The current flow over time can be used to assess overall energy flow in the system, and hence is a very valuable tool when trying to determine the state-of-charge of a battery bank (as an example). While battery voltage can give you clues as to the state-of-charge, they will not be as accurate as actually counting electrons precisely (ie monitoring current flow). This is due to the voltage being affected by loads on the system, and chargers on the system, which skew the voltage either down or up. Product Attributes
