Description
The Back-up Power Box is an assembly of products we’ve put together in response to emergency power questions & concerns. When you want an ultra-reliable back-up power kit, and are comfortable with doing a little basic wiring yourself this is the way to get what you want without the frills.
What we’ve done is combine…
- Samlex 600 pure sinewave inverter – creates household AC from your battery
- 12V output socket – for any 12V car accessories you need to power
- USB port – for all your phones, tablets, and personal electronics
- Samlex 15A battery charger – lets you charge from the wall
- Battery Box – a secure place to house it all
Battery Not Included…
Batteries are heavy, and not cheap to ship. They’re also available just about everywhere, including your local marine shop, or automotive shop. So, we’ve saved you the expense of shipping these things.
What battery do you need?
You can use any Group 24, Group 27, or Group 31, sealed lead-acid, deep cycle battery. The battery box is able to accommodate a group 31, or anything smaller. Do not use automotive starting batteries for cycling applications.
Simply put your battery in the box, remove the cover from the battery’s positive terminal & attach the positive kit cables (labelled) to the terminal & screw them down. Then do the same with the negative battery terminal & kit cables. Strap the cover on the battery box, and you are ready to charge the kit & use it.
Can I Add Solar?
Sure can.
There are several ways to do this, and we can help you choose.
Something as simple as a 60W panel & 8A charge controller (click the links to see).
Or an all-in-one solar kit like the MSK90, or perhaps something a little more ‘off-grid’?
A Great Starter Kit for Tiny Houses…
You can go big to charge faster & run larger/more devices (like a freezer) by using a 290W panel with an MPPT charge controller
In such cases, we recommend going with a pair of golf cart batteries… we can change the battery box size for you in order to fit the golf cart batteries – you’ll need 2 boxes plus battery interconnect cables. Call us, and we’ll make it happen.
This kit lets you charge from utility when it is available (power flows through the system to your loads). Or hook-up solar as described above.
If you place this is a ‘power room’ on the outside end of your tiny house, you will need to run an extension cord or power bar into the living space from that compartment. Be sure to seal the hole – pass that wire low, and vent the battery compartment high.
NOTE: If you are using flooded deep cycle batteries, you will need to keep this kit in a ventilated location (garage, shed, battery/power room with vents, etc). Batteries will emit noxious gas as they charge, and you must not have that in living areas. If you are using SLA/Gel sealed lead-acid batteries, it is safe to use in living areas.
